Balancing the Trade-oo between Prefetch and Rewind Buuering in Video-on-demand Services

چکیده
The eecient delivery of pre-recorded, compressed video plays an important role in a wide variety of emerging multimedia services. However, compressed video exhibits signiicant bursti-ness that complicates the transmission from the video server, transfer across the communication network, and playback at the client site. By capitalizing on buuer space at the client, the server can reduce transmission overheads and enhance playback performance. For example, the server can decrease the peak bandwidth requirement of the outgoing video stream by prefetching frames in advance of each burst. Alternatively, the service could use the buuer space to save previous video frames, in the hope of satisfying VCR operations directly at the client site. This paper investigates this fundamental trade-oo between network bandwidth requirements and eecient VCR functionality in video-on-demand services. In particular, we characterize the relationship between prefetch buuer space and the peak bandwidth requirement. Using these results, we develop a cost model and eecient numerical techniques for balancing the use of prefetch and VCR space in the client playback buuer. Experiments with sixteen compressed, full-length movies demonstrate that this buuer trade-oo is unique for each movie and can be accurately represented with a small number of parameters.

Source Time Scale and Optimal Buuer/bandwidth Trade-oo for Heterogeneous Regulated Traac in a Network Node
| In this paper, we study the problem of resource allocation and control for a network node with regulated traac. Both guaranteed lossless service and statistical service with small loss probability are considered. We investigate the relationship between source characteristics and the buuer/bandwidth trade-oo under both services. Our contributions are the following. For guaranteed lossless serv...

Interactive video-on-demand applications pose a number of interesting problems such as the support of fast forward and rewind at arbitrary speeds. While it has been shown that no single data layout scheme can support these functions at arbitrary speeds without violating load balance conditions, researchers are now exploring methods to allow at least a wide range of speeds to be supported under ...
متن کاملProviding Interactive Functions through Active
Partitioned video broadcast divides a video into segments and sends each segment over one channel in cycles. In this paper, we propose an active buuer management scheme to provide interactive functions in partitioned video broadcast. The scheme uses client side buuering in a novel fashion that relies on the simultaneous availability of \past", \present" and \future" parts of a video and lets th...
متن کاملProviding Interactive Functions through Active Client-Buffer Management in Partitioned Video Multicast VoD Systems
Multicast delivery is an attractive approach to the provision of a video-on-demand service because it scales well to a very large number of clients. The problem is how to provide interactive functions to individual clients within the multicast framework without compromising the scalability of the multicast paradigm. In this paper, we propose an active buuer management scheme to provide interact...

V ideo-on-demand (VoD) combines the service quality of cable TV with the interaction capabilities of a VCR (see Figure 1). Its birth followed technical advances in information retrieval, consumer electronics, networking, and digital signal processing, and the convergence of communications, computers, and entertainment. With VoD services, customers may select programs from massive, remote video ...
